How to get a Alpha Vantage API key

Alpha Vantage issues free keys instantly from a one-form page, with no password and no card. The key is a single string you pass as apikey.

Before you start

Create your Alpha Vantage API key

    Open the key page

    Go to alphavantage.co/support/#api-key.

    Fill in the short form

    Choose what best describes you (e.g. Investor or Software developer), add an organization if you have one, and enter your email.

    Claim the key

    Click GET FREE API KEY. The key appears on the page immediately; copy it. Keep the email too, since the key is tied to it.

  4. 4

    Upgrade only if you need to

    If 25 requests a day is too few, buy a premium plan from the same site; your existing key is upgraded in place.

Test the key

Before wiring the key into a strategy, make one request by hand. It separates “the key is wrong” from “my code is wrong”.

A Meta Data block followed by Time Series (Daily) means the key works. An Information message means the limit or a premium function.

Add the key to your AlgoGP project

    Open your project’s APIs & keys tab

    Open the strategy project, select APIs & keys, and under Platforms choose Alpha Vantage.

    Paste each value

    Paste the values into ALPHA_VANTAGE_API_KEY and click Save. Values are encrypted at rest, never shown again and never written into code or exports.

    Run locally with the same names

    Exported projects read the same names from .env (copy .env.example). Keep .env out of version control.

Keep it out of URLs you share

Because the key travels in the query string, it ends up in shell history, proxy logs and screenshots. Store it in AlgoGP Keys & secrets or .env, and redact URLs before posting them anywhere.

One free key per person. Spreading requests across several free keys breaks the terms; upgrade instead.

Does the Alpha Vantage key expire?

No. A free key keeps working as long as it is used within the terms.
